Why did they divide Jesus’ outer garments and cast lots for His tunic (2)
New Update
“Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took His garments and made four parts, to each soldier a part, and also the tunic. Now the tunic was without seam, woven from the top in one piece. They said therefore among themselves, ‘Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be,’ that the Scripture might be fulfilled which says: ‘They divided My garments among them, and for My clothing th ...

Why did Jesus the Son of God have to live a poor life?

“For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sake He became poor, that you through His poverty might become rich.” (2 Corinthians 8:9)

It is recorded in John 3:35, “The Father loves the Son and has given all things into His hand,” and in Colossians 1:16, “For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities?all things have been created by Him and for Him.” Jesus is the Son of God and the Master of all creation, but why did He live a poor life?
He did so to give us material blessing just as written in 2 Corinthians 8:9, “For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sake He became poor, that you through His poverty might become rich.”
When God created the first man and he lived in the Garden of Eden, he lived an abundant life in every aspect without laboring with sweat and in toil. Since the first man Adam disobeyed God and sinned, however, the earth and all things were accursed along with him so that people could eat only by sweat and in toil (Genesis 3:17-19).
Thus, all have suffered from poverty since Adam sinned and was accursed. In order to redeem them from poverty and make them rich, Jesus suffered poverty.
Some say Jesus was poor in a spiritual sense, but Jesus was never poor in spirit because He was one with God and was conceived by the Holy Spirit. Some others say that to ask for material blessing is not in accordance with the will of God.
In the Scriptures, God often says He will make us rich. He has let many live a wealthy and prosperous life who feared Him and obeyed His words such as Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, and Daniel. Therefore, we should be able to receive material blessing in the redemptive grace of Jesus the Lord who redeemed us from poverty.
God works in accordance with love and justice, and lets us reap whatever we sow. As parents want to give good things to their children, so God, full of love, wants to give His children whatever they ask with faith (Mark 11:24). However, they cannot receive what they want if they do not ask, and not all that they ask are given to them unconditionally.
3 John 1:2 says, “Beloved, I pray that in all respects you may prosper and be in good health, just as your soul prospers.” As said, we can neither succeed in every aspect nor enjoy good health until our soul prospers. Our soul prospers when we live according to God’s words and restore His image. Deuteronomy 28:2 also dictates, “And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you, if you will obey the LORD your God.”
While living by God’s words, we should also sow seeds of truth in faith to receive blessing. If we desire to reap without sowing, it is against the law of God and we are deemed to mock God (Galatians 6:7).
Even in great faith, “he who sows sparingly shall also reap sparingly; and he who sows bountifully shall also reap bountifully” (2 Corinthians 9:6). So, to the extent that we sow with faith, God will let us reap with a good measure?pressed down, shaken together, and running over?more than double, and as our soul prospers, He will let us reap thirty, sixty, or a hundred times.
‘He who sows bountifully shall also reap bountifully’ does not simply mean the harvest in amount or quantity. Jesus praised a widow who out of her poverty gave two small copper coins, which means all that she had to live on. When we give Him with heart and sincerity, God joyfully receives our heart and the incense within it.
When we give Him offerings, God doesn’t always let us reap material blessing. Sometimes He will wait to give us material blessing until our soul prospers, which is a true blessing. When he feared God with all his household, and gave many alms to the Jewish people, and prayed to God continually, Cornelius and all his household gained salvation. Dorcas abounded with deeds of kindness and charity, and she was brought back to life after death.
